New Delhi: India has banned wheat exports, sending bushel prices to record highs and drawing criticism from the Group of Seven worried about protectionism as inflation soars in the wake of the Ukraine war.

INDIA’S ban on wheat exports Saturday fuelled international prices by almost 6 per cent a bushel (60 pounds or one million kernels or 27.21 kg) when global markets opened Monday. Locally, prices dropped sharply by 4-8 per cent in different states — Rs 200-250 a quintal in Rajasthan, Rs 100-150 a quintal in Punjab, and about Rs 100 a quintal in Uttar Pradesh.

With the February 24 invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the supply disruption that followed, global wheat prices jumped over 60 per cent in 2022; just Russia and Ukraine together account for almost a third of world wheat exports.

With the February 24 invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the supply disruption that followed, global wheat prices jumped over 60 per cent in 2022; just Russia and Ukraine together account for almost a third of world wheat exports.

The ban is also being seen as a measure to control rising domestic prices. Retail inflation hit an eight-year high of 7.79 per cent in April, driven by rising food and fuel prices.A few days back, the Centre had said that it was still targetting record exports of 10 million tonnes that would help compensate for Ukraine’s reduced supply. Recently, a commerce ministry statement had stated that India would send trade delegations to nine countries – Morocco, Tunisia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, Algeria and Lebanon – to explore possibilities of boosting wheat shipments.

Meanwhile, wheat importers in Asia were scrambling to find new sources of supply after India banned exports of the grain at the weekend in a bid to keep a lid on soaring domestic prices, trade sources told Reuters. Importers, especially those in Asia, were banking on wheat from India, the world`s second-biggest producer, after exports from the Black Sea region plunged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Ukraine, which previously accounted for 12 percent of global exports.

The spike, exacerbated by fertiliser shortages and poor harvests, has fuelled inflation globally and raised fears of famine and social unrest in poorer countries.

Juventus can seal a steady cruise to the end of the Serie A season with a winning feeling when they welcome Lazio to Allianz Stadium on Monday.
A stoppage-time goal from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic earned Lazio a dramatic 2-2 draw at Juventus in Serie A on Monday, a point that sealed the Rome club’s spot in next season’s Europa League and overshadowed farewells from Giorgio Chiellini and Paulo Dybala.
Already assured of a fourth-placed finish this term, Juventus could take the game to Lazio with the pressure off, racing into a 10th-minute lead after Dusan Vlahovic’s flying header found the net.
The only match that Lazio has lost in its last six Italian Serie A dates came at the hands of the league’s top team. Otherwise, the Biancocelsti have won four and took a draw from another ahead of Monday’s meeting with Juventus. Things haven’t been quite as rosy for Juve, as it is coming off of back-to-back losses, but it has secured its fourth spot in the league table and a spot in next year’s UEFA Champions League competition. Juventus has won the last two meetings between the clubs. You can see what happens when you stream the match on Paramount+.
Massimiliano Allegri has to manage a number of injuries for this evening’s clash, with Denis Zakaria, Danilo, Arthur, Federico Chiesa, Weston McKennie and Kaio Jorge all sidelined through various physical problems.
Whilst Maurizio Sarri only has one absence to consider, the unavailable player is star striker Ciro Immobile, who is out with an ankle injury. The loss of the Italian striker is a huge blow for Lazio as he has netted 27 league goals this season, 17 more than the next most prolific Biancocelesti player.
