BJP MP Ashok Nete blamed the state government for the elephant migration. The only elephant camp in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district has a history of more than six decades, but the state government considers it a blessing to erase this history and enhance the ornament of a private museum of a wealthy industrialist. If this private museum is in Maharashtra, it would be acceptable once, but in a state like Gujarat, there is no way for the state government to know exactly what it wants to get by shipping elephants from Maharashtra.
Gadchiroli, the largest forest in the state, Aheri, Temporadalli, Sironcha talukas in the same district also have valuable tree resources and most of the revenue comes from this district. In 1962, two elephants, Basanti and Mahalinga, were brought to the Kamalapur forest reserve in Aheri taluka for timber transport. Due to its useful habitat for elephants, it was named as ‘Elephant Camp’.
