Unification Of Three Municipal Corporations: The three municipal corporations of Delhi will merge on May 22. The Union Ministry of the Interior has issued a notice in this regard. The ‘Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2022’ was passed by Parliament in April. Following this, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his approval on April 18.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by subsection (i) of section three of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022 (10 of 2022), the Central Government may, to constitute the Delhi Municipal Corporation” According to the provisions of the bill, the purpose of the integration of the three municipal corporations of Delhi is to ensure optimal utilization of resources, coordination and strategic planning.
The ruling Aam Aadmi (AAP) party in Delhi has been targeting the BJP over the decision to merge the three municipal corporations. AAP says BJP has merged corporations fearing defeat in MCD elections.
Recently, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said: “For 15 years, the BJP is in power in the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) and is receiving money. Its term on May 18 expires. Does it have the right constitutional decision to make such an important decision (bulldozer action)? Let the elections happen and let the winning party decide. Everyone knows that this time only ‘AAP’ will come in MCD.” While the BJP says that the AAP government has been treating MCD like a stepmother. Therefore, the merger is necessary.
