Navjot Sidhu, one of the great leaders of the Punjab Congress, is often embroiled in controversy, but now he is to be jailed in a dispute that occurred 34 years ago. In fact, on the afternoon of December 27, 1988 in Patiala, there was a minor argument between Navjot Sidhu and Gurnam Singh (65) in a fight behind the wheel.

Gurnam’s family alleges that Sidhu hit Gurnam on the left side. Because of this, Gurnam suffered a brain hemorrhage and died. His lawyers had also argued in the High Court that Gurnam Singh died of a head injury sustained by Sidhu. Therefore, it is clearly a case of murder, as this injury cannot be caused by mistake.

The trial court had acquitted, the High Court had reversed the decision, in this case the Patiala trial court had acquitted Navjot Sidhu. After this, Gurnam Singh’s relatives took refuge in the Punjab-Haryana High Court. The High Court reversed the decision of the court of first instance. The High Court had held that Gurnam Singh did not die of heart failure but of a head injury.

The medical board constituted in this case had cited a head injury and heart conditions as the cause of death. After this, the High Court sentenced Sidhu and his associate Rpininder Sandhu. However, the High Court had said that it was not a deliberate murder but the result of an impulsiveness in the act.

He admitted to having killed in a channel program

However, the Supreme Court later suspended Sidhu’s sentence and allowed him to run in the elections. The case then took another turn when members of Gurnam Singh’s family submitted to the High Court a CD of Sidhu admitting to killing Gurnam on a channel show in 2010. Following this, the high court in its decision released Gurnam Singh. Sidhu imposing a fine of one thousand rupees. Family members filed a petition for review, in which the Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced Sidhu to a rigorous one-year prison term.
