There was a positive discussion at the meeting of the Minister of Medical Education and the Nurses Association on Tuesday. After receiving the minutes of this meeting, the president of the Maharashtra State Nurses Association, Dr. Manisha Shinde, finally called off the strike today (Wednesday).
Nurses at government hospitals across the state had called an indefinite strike starting May 28 to demand long-awaited hiring and promotion, including transfer based on nurses’ application. Thousands of nurses across the state have gone on indefinite strike, affecting patient services at government hospitals in the state, including JJ Hospital, GT Hospital and St George’s Hospital in Mumbai. Several surgeries were also cancelled.
The government finally took notice of the turmoil on Tuesday. In the afternoon, a meeting was held between Amit Deshmukh and the organizations in the Ministry. All the demands were discussed at the meeting and Deshmukh had promised to accept them. But at the same time, it became clear that it would take at least a month to meet these demands. As the general discussion turned positive, it was expected that the strike would be called off by nightfall. However, due to the non-receipt of the meeting minutes, the strike will continue, said Dr. Manisha Shinde, president of the Maharashtra State Nurses Association. After receiving the minutes of today’s meeting, it was decided to call off the strike after discussing with the comrades.
