Environmentalists oppose locals in support of overnight jungle safari in Kaas…

And: The Satara Forest Department has launched a new nighttime jungle safari at Cas Plateau. The fear of the extinction of wildlife and biodiversity on the Caspian Plateau has been pushed back by activists from the social, environmental and animal welfare movements in Satara. Apart from this, preparations are also underway to challenge it in the Green National Court of Arbitration. Locals have opposed the closure of the safari, citing subsistence reasons.

The Caspian Plateau has biodiversity. It is famous for its variety of flowers and butterflies that bloom from August to October. The main part of the Cas Plateau is a part of the reserved forest plateau composed of basalt rock and covered by a thin layer of soil. The Caspian Plateau covers an area of approximately 10 square kilometers with 280 species of flowers, in addition to 850 species of vines, plants, shrubs and other species found only during the months of August to October. Around 59 species of reptiles are found here. Kas Bhambwali Tapola Mahabaleshwar Patan is an area covered with evergreen forest. Tourists come to this area only for three months. The Kas Plateau Executive Committee has said that this is an experiment to start year-round tourism.

The Satara Forest Department has decided to launch a night jungle safari on the Kas Plateau and in the forest covering an area of 10 square kilometers. The problem has been raised for night patrols as well as night jungle safaris as we do not have enough staff to prevent poaching and human encroachment in the area. It is alleged that the safari was started due to the interests of hoteliers in the area. Basically, the forest department has not been able to say what exactly is the tourism in this jungle safari. Tourists traveling on this world safari train will deviate only from the main road. Therefore, it is not about leaving those vehicles and going to any natural and wild space. A single safari of eight people will cost Rs 4,000. Reservations on the Night Jungle Safari website will be available at the Satara Forest Department office at 7pm and 10pm. Environmental and wildlife lovers in Satara have filed a written complaint with the forestry department against the overnight jungle safari.

Existing roads will be used for unused trails in the forest and not for driving. Vehicles will be diverted only on these roads. Therefore, the purpose is to prevent human encroachment, encroachment, infiltration, hunting, deforestation, etc. in this forest area.

Mahadev Mohite , Forest ranger, Satara

Overnight jungle safaris are a must in some parts of India. It has no legal basis, not even in forestry law. There are no guidelines for that. It must be said that this is a deliberate deception in someone’s head. Despite being aware of the catastrophic consequences, this type is being carried out by the authorities under pressure from someone who conveniently ignores it.

Sunil Bhoite, Pranimitra, Satara

Kas Executive Committee workers have extinguished the forest areas of Kas, Satara, Jawali and Mahadare. The forest safari started in collaboration with the forest department has started to provide employment for local youth.

Somnath Khadhav, Former president, Executive Committee of the Kas Plateau. Kas cannot be compared with the Tadoba, Radhanagari and Sahyadri tiger projects. The Kas plateau area is a sensitive area. Night safaris have been started in the Kas area. This decision is unfortunate and this jungle safari could have a huge impact on the biodiversity of the environment. The Cass area must be fully open at night. The Forest Department has no objection to the tour, but is opposed to the night safari. – Dr Sandeep Gajanan ShrotriFounder, Ranavata Environment and Nature Conservation Board, Satara.
