Drinking water problem persists in western Vidarbha salinity belt…

Mohan Atalkar, Loksatta
Amravati: The three districts of West Vidarbha are still neglected due to the lack of implementation of the Kharpanpatta schemes and the problem of drinking water in these areas is still not fully resolved. On the other hand, there is a cadre of stagnant agricultural research in the salt belt.
About 15 km on both banks of the Purna River. The wide salt flats spread out. The Purna River, flowing from east to west, covers an area of 7,500 square kilometers. Of which 4700 square kilometers. This means that more than half of the area falls in the salt belt. There is brackish water in 17 talukas in three districts namely Amravati, Akola and Buldhana. The groundwater is not suitable for irrigation or drinking, as it is saline along with the soil. Alternatively, there is no other option than surface storage. Irrigation facilities are also not available to farmers. Due to the salinity of the soil and water in the salt fringe, citizens have to deal with both agricultural and drinking water crises. Between 85 and 90 percent of the surface of the three districts is devoted to rainfed crops. Due to the high salinity in the salt belt, farmers cannot engage in horticulture. Due to the scarcity of drinking water resources, there are limitations in the water supply schemes. The drinking water problem persists in hundreds of towns in the area.
The Kharpanpatta High Authority Committee was created on April 11, 2000 by the Kharpanpatta Development Board. This committee had studied and presented its report. Then, in 2007, the government created a committee under the leadership of then Minister of State Vasudha Deshmukh to find solutions to the problems. The committee submitted a report, but it could not be implemented.
As no initiative is being taken even at the level of the agriculture department, all the farmers in this area depend on traditional crops. The proposal for an independent research center for the area has also been shelved due to the indifference of the people’s representatives.
The Purna River originates from the Satpuda range. Enter Maharashtra from the backwaters of the Amravati district. This river also flows from Malkapur taluka of Buldana district. It then enters the Muktainagar taluka of Jalgaon district. Although other brackish belts in the country have been created by human error, experts claim that this is the only brackish in nature. This area has acid soil, acid water. The availability of water is greater in the soil. But unfortunately it also has a high salinity so it cannot be used for irrigation. Although it is a protected olive, the same amount of water is required to save the life of the crop. If more water is given, fewer salts will come out. This process takes place as soon as the water at the top begins to evaporate. Farmers providing protected water have to use gypsum.
Only with proper rainwater management can crops be grown in agriculture. The 60 cm layer above the ground is almost non-alkaline. As you go deeper, the salinity increases. Dill, egg, cumin are the best crops grown in this area. Rabbi Gram comes better. He also tastes a bit salty. This area will have to be irrigated by providing water for irrigation through farms. Now the villages of the salt belt have been taken over in the Pokra project. But as is the case elsewhere under this project, general work is being done in this area and it doesn’t seem to be very helpful to the farmers. Experts say that farmers in the area will not be relieved unless an independent organization conducts an investigation into the salt belt.
Considering the land, irrigation system and other characteristics of the salt belt, separate planning for the salt belt should be done to make the farming schemes more effective. A separate proposal on this was prepared in 2014. You have been instructed to verify it and submit it along with the required new entries. Protected irrigation should be created in these areas. Therefore, an extensive cultivation campaign has been suggested.
