Dissatisfaction in the sugar industry due to export restrictions;

Kolhapur: While sugar production has peaked this year, sugar exports have been a source of relief for the sugar industry. Now the central government has imposed restrictions on sugar exports. The holy central government has decided that no more than 100 lakh tons of sugar will be exported. The decision is said to have been made due to fears of higher sugar prices in the country if more sugar is exported. In a sense, the imposition of the sugar export ban has angered the sugar industry.
This year, the Indian sugar industry has set a production record. The country has produced around 390 lakh tons of sugar. To address the problem of excess sugar, the central government has given priority to sugar exports and ethanol production. The conversion rate of sugar to ethanol has increased significantly this season to 3.5 million tons of ethanol production this year.
Export registration
Initially, the central government subsidized sugar exports. The grants have been discontinued for the past few months. However, the sugar industry maintained its role as a sugar exporter. This was due to the large national reserves of sugar, which led to the payment of FRP to sugarcane growers for the advance obtaining of money through export, as well as the regularization of bank loans and interest installments. The Indian Sugar Manufacturers Association (ISMA) had estimated that 8 million tonnes of sugar would be exported at the start of the season. Now this number has increased by about 10 tons. In 2017-18 it had exported 6.2 tons, in 18-19 38, in 19-20 59.60 and in 2020-21 7 million tons. The current 2021-22 season has become historic in terms of sugar exports. Export agreement of 9 million tons. Eighty lakh tons of sugar have been exported and the process of exporting the remaining sugar is underway.
With the boom in the sugar export market, the central government made a sudden U-turn and decided not to increase sugar exports. A sugar farmers’ conference was recently held in Mumbai. It had projected a rise in sugar exports of up to 120 lakh tonnes this year and a price rise of Rs 4-5 per kg. Senior officials from the Union Ministry of Agriculture, who were present at the conference, explained this at the ministerial level. Government sources moved immediately. It took precautionary measures against sugar exports, taking precautionary measures against rising sugar prices in the face of rising inflation. Therefore, a strategic decision was made not to export more than 100 lakh tons of sugar this season. Despite the agreement to export 90 lakh tons of sugar, the remaining 10 lakh tons of sugar is allowed to be exported. But before doing so, permission from the central government is required. Sugar mills will have to break down the thresholds of government offices. On the one hand, while the export market for sugar has eased, the central government’s concern about its non-export has become a matter of concern for the sugar industry.
Export barriers
Although they want to export sugar, they face difficulties. Export sugar is in raw form. With the sugar season in India about to close, the chances of raw sugar production are slim. Due to the wheat export policy, the availability of containers for the export of sugar faces difficulties due to the large stock in the port. This availability of rail cars is not enough. Roads are congested due to heavy rain. Thus the way of exporting sweet sugar is also bitter.
Due to the decrease in sugar production in Brazil this year, India has an opportunity to export sugar. There was no picture of sugar exports fetching much higher prices than the Indian market. In view of the decrease in sugar stocks, manufacturers preferred to export. The country still has sugar reserves. The central government has taken the precaution of not exporting more sugar and this decision is not in the interest of the sugar industry.

Experts say that the price of wood from popular trees is 700 to 800 rupees per quintal. 250 trees can be planted on one hectare. The average height of a tree is about 80 feet.
