Sangli: Ahilya Devi Holkar’s plaque was defaced by unknown persons at Kargani in Atpadi taluka on Thursday night, making the atmosphere in the village tense. Police in riot gear stormed a demonstration on Friday, driving out hundreds of protesters in trucks.
It was learned that a plaque was erected at Ahilya Devi Holkar Chowk in Kargani village on the occasion of Rajmata Ahilya Devi Holkar’s birth anniversary. An unidentified person tore down the panel on Thursday night. After this incident came to the attention of the Kargani villagers in the morning, a large number of young people gathered at Ahilya Devi Holkar Chowk. Angry youths closed the Kargani market and protested against the toppling of billboards. Due to the closure, all markets in the town were completely closed except for essential services.
The police from the Kargani remote area police station and the young people gathered in the chowk clashed. The youths protested against the police, claiming that they were using the language of Areravi. Meanwhile, inspector Sharad Memane rushed to the scene and sought understanding from the angry youths.
