Four defendants in the 1993 Mumbai serial explosions were brought in court today. After the hearing, the court kept the four defendants in judicial custody for 14 days. The case was taken up by the CBI with the Gujarat ATS only after the hearing. In 1993 there were 12 chain bombings in Bombay. All four defendants have been wanted for the past 29 years.
For the past 29 years, Gujarat ATS and CBI have been searching for the four accused in the Mumbai serial explosions. The Gujarat ATS caught the four accused from Ahmedabad last week. The defendants were placed in judicial custody for 14 days after a court hearing on Monday. The Gujarat ATS has now referred the case to the CBI.
He had been playing with the law for 29 years
Those accused of the Mumbai explosions had been on the run from the law for the past 29 years. But last week, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested all four. Not only Mumbai Police, CBI or Gujarat ATS but also many security agencies around the world were looking for the four defendants. Interpol and Red Corner notices were issued against all four defendants.
Explosions in Mumbai kill 257
A bomb blast in Mumbai in 1993 killed at least 257 people. More than 700 people were injured in the explosions. Charge sheets have been filed against 189 of those charged in the bomb blasts. In 2006, a Mumbai court convicted 100 of the defendants. The arrest of the four is considered very important as the accused is in contact with Dawood Ibrahim.
