Buldhana: Undri village in Chikhali taluka of Buldhana district was recently renamed. Undri village will now be known as Udayanagar. Undri village is situated on the Khamgaon-Jalna road and the population of the village is around 8,000. The name Undri made the villagers hesitate. According to the villagers, ‘Undri’ is also a swear word in rural areas. As a result, the battle for the name change of the town began. Meanwhile, in 1981, he sent an anonymous letter to then Prime Minister Abdul Rehman Antulay, demanding to ‘change the name of our village’ from Undri village. The Chief Minister’s Office immediately took notice and sought a resolution from the village sarpanch. Efforts to change the name have continued ever since. Sarpanch Pradip Ambhore went on to name the town.

Finally, on May 31, the Department of General Administration issued a notice in the Maharashtra Government Gazette. The proposal to change the name of the village from Undri to Udayanagar was approved by the Home Ministry of the Government of India in a letter dated February 17, 2022, by order of the Government of Maharashtra. The change must be noted in state government records, he said.

While discussing the name change with the locals, the distinguished citizen of the original village of Undri, Adv. Motisingh Mohta said: ‘The fight to change the name of Undri village started about 50 years ago. Attempts were made at various levels to change the name. Locals followed up with correspondence from the Panchayat Samiti directly to the Prime Minister and President. Finally, that request was met. The villagers are delighted that the town of Undri will now be known as Udayanagar.
