Although the mother is a person, the mother is also an attitude, an emotion. As that feeling becomes broader, it will contain love, peace, brotherhood, kindness, unity… but today she is wild. Her mother, Anna Jarvis, also protested the commercialization of Mother’s Day. What is the global significance of ‘Mother’s Day’? Tomorrow is World Mother’s Day.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m sorry I started this Mother’s Day. I’m not looking forward to Mother’s Day. It should be a celebration of motherhood, not a single mother. It should have been a celebration of motherhood, but he has lost his sanctity in view of what he has become today. He cannot celebrate by simply sending greeting cards, sweets and flowers to his mother. We should be able to go beyond that. This day should be cancelled.”
This statement by Anna Jarvis (1804-1948), the mother of Mother’s Day, still applies today. In today’s world of capitalism, where the market for everything is capitalized, the general feeling of motherhood is diminishing. All that is left is the selfishness of the individual, which is why violence is rampant in our country or even the world. That is why it is necessary to know the real motivation behind Mother’s Day. There is a need to start the ceremony in a real sense.
It is true that Anna made a successful attempt to start Mother’s Day in memory of her mother, Anna, but it was her mother who introduced it. The life of Ann Reeves Jarvis (1832-1905), born in the United States in the 19th century, began immediately. However, the subsequent political and social upheaval put her life on a different path. Ann, who gave birth to eleven children, had to face the death of seven children. It is true that her mother’s heart was broken, but when the mother’s heart, knowing the pain, goes beyond personal pain, she becomes bigger and bigger. That’s what happened to her. The surrounding conditions were worrying. Ann started working for all the sad mothers in the area. The organization was formed to ensure that children are not bullied at a young age and that they receive proper care and was called ‘Mothers’ Friendship Club’.
Meanwhile, the American Civil War (1861-1865) intensified. No war will kill her, once again her mother’s heart cried out to many. In response to her, her club saved the lives of many by serving impartially, regardless of the soldier’s side. But that was not enough. At the end of the war, her efforts began to create a bond of love and friendship. Attempts to reunite families torn apart by war! She called the day, ‘Mother’s Friendship Day’. She is the mother who unites the family. She decided to make it her life’s task to unite all mothers, build sisterhood and honor motherhood in the future, keeping in mind the same sibling bond. Instead of war, she continued to reward love and peace. At that time, she also put what she understood by mother.
After her death, Anna struggled to fulfill her mother’s dream. If we want to bring peace, harmony, compassion in the world, then mother, motherhood must be respected, this is her feeling. To make it more complete, she came up with the idea to celebrate Mother’s Day on a grand scale to glorify motherhood and she tried her best to make it come true. Her efforts and those of her followers were successful, and in 1914, her then president, Vrudo Wilson, recognized her as a major source of strength and inspiration for the country, in such glorious words! Every year on the second Sunday in May (Ann’s Memorial Day) it was decided to celebrate it as a national holiday. Mother’s Day was celebrated in many countries, but it was interpreted differently. The breadth of ‘Mother’s Day’ narrowed as it was more personal than the glory of ‘motherhood’. Naturally, it began to take a commercial form.
Since he was unable to attend an event, he sent his mother a beautiful peace-loving white carnation to appease the mother in attendance. According to her, carnation flowers do not release petals, they wither, but they retain all the petals until the end, which is what the mother does, like this flower. But later, ‘Mother’s Day’ became the carnation flower and she started the market for this flower. With the approach of Mother’s Day, the prices of these flowers began to skyrocket. His colors made sense. Many began to use this day to raise funds for various causes. The Gifts, Congratulations business was blessed. (It is said that 16 crores of greeting cards are sold worldwide today). Anna couldn’t stand the emotional market. According to her, if he wanted to have such a personal celebration, write a big letter to her mother instead of just showing her love by sending her sweets and cards, go meet her, stay with her, but it wasn’t happening. Eventually she started speaking out against it. She even got arrested for disturbing the peace at a big event. As a last resort, she ran to court to cancel the day. (1923) However, every year a Mother’s Day celebration began to take shape and turnover of millions of rupees began. Holiness, respect, affection between families, love between people, fraternity, meeting, everything flew away in a whirlwind of money.
Anna, who never became a mother, became the mother of ‘Mother’s Day’, but was eventually left alone. Anna, who was in critical condition, received support from the health center there. It is said that the florist who became rich thanks to ‘Mother’s Day’ was responsible for all her expenses. A true sentiment vanished in the glare of money. But isn’t that the reality today? The tide of money and power is flowing so much that man is forgetting to recognize man, who will hear the cry of motherhood?
Whether it is a war or a conflict between people in daily life, it is doing harm. Mutual hatred inevitably leads to sadness, pain, and ruin. If we want to get rid of him, everyone must also take care of our mother. Only if motherhood and kindness in motherhood are encouraged, then can we stop killing our own people in the name of caste religion, which runs for selfishness, for power. Today, it’s time to learn the full meaning of motherhood. Because the world needs peace, brotherhood, unity.
Although the mother is a person, the mother is also an attitude, an emotion. The more she spreads that feeling, the more she will contain love, peace, brotherhood, kindness, unity. The same goes for Mother’s Day tomorrow.
